Position Summary

Oversee the work of assigned crews of maintenance mechanics to assure a high level of efficiency and compliance with safety requirements. Responsible for performing journey maintenance mechanic work. Repairs and maintains equipment in all generating stations and associated equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Duties as a leader will include: Efficient use of BWL resources; ensuring a proper level of productivity at all times; prioritizing work in order of most urgent; communicating properly with all customers; coordinating work assignments with internal/external personnel, completing all required paperwork; following and enforcing all BWL policies, Employee Code of Conduct, safety and accident investigation procedures; and maintain and encourage a positive attitude among employees.
  • Repairs and maintains various processes and equipment associated with all BWL facilities including: coal equipment, ash handling system equipment, fuel system equipment, boiler systems and associated equipment such as pumps, fans, heaters, regulators/valves, pre-heaters, etc.; turbine system equipment such as an E.H.U. system, filters, various types of seals, and steam packing, etc., condensate system and related equipment; waste water treatment system equipment; cooling tower system equipment; hydro plant systems including dams and flood gates; various types of pumps; and generating system equipment such as hydro system, exciters, G.E.X., etc.; various other miscellaneous plant equipment.
  • Must have understanding of basic concepts of Insulating and Refractor Applicator duties.
  • Uses the tools of the trade to perform Journeyworker duties of maintenance mechanic, millwright, machine repair, and machinist.
  • Tools used include gas welder, cutoff and chain saw, submersible pumps, oxyacetylene and Mapp torch kit; gas drill, hammer-drill, impact wrenches, various pneumatic and hydraulic tools; pipe-threading and pipe-bending tools; measuring tools including micrometers and calipers; and rigging tools such as chain falls, pullers, trolleys, A-frames, etc.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints.
  • Climbs and works from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Works in confined spaces.
  • Communicates clearly through speech and in writing.
  • Operates mobile equipment such as trucks, cranes, worker lifts, scissor lifts, trailered welding unit, air compressors, etc. requiring use of hand and foot controls.
  • Required to follow BWL safety manual and wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, weekends, and rotating weekly standby.
  • Performs other duties necessitated by job responsibilities.
  • Supports maintenance needs of the City of Lansing when needed.

Required

Job Specifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualified Journeyworker Maintenance Mechanic, Millwright, Machine Repair, or Plumber/ Pipefitter.
  • Must pass Maintenance Mechanic Leader Assessment or have completed BWL's Emerging Leaders course.

Preferred

  • Power Plant experience.
  • Related military experience.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • Will need to sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist intermittently.
  • The majority of shifts will be spent lifting, walking, and standing.
  • Must have the ability to stand for hours at a time.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry materials up to 50lbs and occasionally lift various tools such as chain falls and buckets weighing up to 75lbs.
  • Must be able to handle tools and complete work on a computer.
  • Will need to regularly reach below and above shoulder level.
  • Use of foot controls required.
  • Must have good visual acuity for reading blueprints and operating rigging and lifting equipment such as cranes, fork trucks, worker lifts, etc.
  • Must be able to localize sounds and hear conversations in noisy industrial environment.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Will need to be cleared for respirator use prior to start.
  • Plant environment.
  • Temperature range extreme.
  • Sound and dust levels high.
  • Possible exposure to lead, asbestos, fluoride, chlorine, soda ash and/or lime.
